Middleburgh- John "Jack" R. Westerman, 87, formerly of Livingstonville, died Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Fulton Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Gloversville after a brief illness.
Born August 3, 1928 in Kearney, NJ, he was the son of John Stephen and Elizabeth (McMahon) Westerman,
Jack was a United States Navy Veteran serving from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the VFW Post 2161 in Middleburgh.
Jack retired from the Schoharie County Sheriff's Department as a deputy sheriff where he worked from 1982 until 1995.
A hard working family man and father, he was a member of Teamsters Union #44, a bartender and highway superintendent. He was a life long member of Broome Volunteer Fire Dept. Jack was a loyal friend and neighbor to those in need.
He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth McMahon and John "Slim" Westerman and Eldean Tompkins.
Survivors include his children: John R. Westerman, Jr. of Middleburgh, Sam Westerman of Middlburgh, Susan "Tootie" Morrow (Danny McCrodden) of Long Island, Julie (Jim) Beretz of Middleburgh, Allan (Yvonne) Westerman of Middleburgh, and Linda Leith (Greg VanDyke) of Middleburgh; sixteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; stepsister: Maria Manish of PA; stepbrother: Joe Westerman of CO and many McMahon and Westerman relatives.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at 5 pm at Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River Street, Middleburgh, NY with Rev. Carol Coltrain officiating. A calling hour will be held from 4-5 pm prior to the service. Inurnment will be private at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.
