Sloansville- John Francis "Bud" McCabe, Jr., 93, formerly of Sprakers Road in Sloansville, died Sunday, September 18, 2016 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, after a long illness.
Bud was born September 2, 1923 in Philadelphia, PA, and was the son of John Francis Sr. and Hazel B. (Bennett) McCabe.
In his early years he was the proprietor of McCabe's Radio & TV Shop. Later he worked for Adirondack Radio in Amsterdam, which later became Adirondack Electronics, Inc. in Schenectady. At the end of his career, Bud worked at Grimmer's Electronics, Inc. in Schenectady until retiring. He was a member of the Electric City Barber Shop Chorus in Schenectady, a Ham Radio Operator with the call letters of W2BKR, and was on the Schoharie Central School Board of Education for 9 years.
A US Army Signal Corp veteran, he proudly served his country from January 1943 until October 1945, stationed on the USS Emily Weider Army Hospital in the Pacific Theater as a Radio Operator.
Bud was predeceased by his Granddaugther, Kerry Gilboe, and his sister, Jane Conover.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Blenis McCabe, whom he married on February 19, 1949, two daughters, Nola (John) Tauriello of Rensselaer, Algene (Joe) Borden of Navarre Beach, FL, a son, John (Mary) Francis McCabe III of Winooski, VT, two Grandsons, Daniel Francis Lynch and John Francis McCabe IV, and one neice, Candace Conover.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 12:00 pm at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Central Bridge with Rev. Steffen Zehrfuhs officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY. There will be no formal visitation.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made in Bud's honor to Bethany Lutheran Church, PO Box 273, Central Bridge, NY 12035.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill and Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home of Middleburgh.
