John Z. Markley

February 5, 1947 — February 17, 2024

John Zitko Markley, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday, February 17th, 2024 in Cobleskill, NY at the age of 77. He was born on Wednesday, February 5th, 1947 to Andrew P. Markley II and Rose Zitko Markley.

He was a graduate of Richmondville Central School, Class of 1965 and was a lifelong resident of the local area. Throughout his High School years, he enjoyed playing basketball and cross country.

John was an employee of the D&H Railroad, a fourth-generation railroad worker, commuting daily from Cobleskill to Albany for 32 years to support his family. He was a selfless and dedicated family man and his family always came first whether it be raising and providing for his two young daughters, spending cherished moments with his beloved wife or daily check-ins and weekly visits with his parents.

After an early retirement, John never sat still, except for Sundays which he always said “no work on Sundays because Sunday is the Lord’s Day”. When he wasn’t enjoying his time with family, he filled his days doing all the things he enjoyed most. Summers were filled with yardwork, time hiking in the woods, working out, playing tennis or pickle-ball. In the fall, hunting season was his favorite time of the year, as his days were spent in the woods hunting with his brother, grandsons and even his granddaughter. Winter was time for watching ALL sports while talking on the phone or texting with his grandsons throughout. Then there was NASCAR, which always included the weekly pool at the Broken Spoke and the annual August camping trip to NASCAR at Watkins Glen with friends and family.

John enjoyed volunteer work. He volunteered for Richmondville Rural Cemetery Association, and was a committee member, fundraising volunteer, and grounds assistant.

On October 26, 1964 John was married to Christy Holmes. John was looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

He is survived by his loving wife, Christy Markley; daughters, Andrea Bray (Robert) and Angela West (Kristopher Andre), and cherished grandchildren Tyler West, Travis West, Chase Bennett (Brittany), Cameron Bennett, Mackenzie Bennett, and Katelyn Andre. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Bongiorno, and brother, Andrew P. Markley III.

There are not enough words or pages to write them down on that could capture his presence and the positive impact he had on anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. His outgoing and charismatic personality brightened the lives of many. While he may be gone his legacy and spirit will live on.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 5:00pm with a visitation period from 3:00-5:00pm at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Richmondville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Richmondville Rural Cemetery, PO Box 296, Richmondville, NY 12149.
