John Hanevy

Richmondville- John J. Hanevy died Monday, July 27, at Cooperstown Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, where he had been a resident for several years after suffering a stroke. He is survived by his wife, June (Huggins), a son, John Michael, Reston, VA and two daughters, Cynthia Hanevy, Willard of Missouri and Dorine Hanevy of Oswego, NY. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Drew, James and Jessica Barnard, his sister, Agnes Kennedy, of Massapequa Park, NY and several nieces and nephews.

John was born to John William and Margaret (Shay) Hanevy December 10, 1931, in New York City. He was educated in the New York City public schools and graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1950. He received his bachelor’s degree from NYS College for Teachers at Albany in 1954, majoring in mathematics and science. He proceeded to do graduate work at Columbia University, and, under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, at Rutgers University and RPI, receiving a master’s degree from RPI.

John started his teaching career at Richmondville Central School and later transferred to SUNY, Cobleskill, where he taught mathematics until retirement. He treasured memories of the years spent in both schools and considered himself lucky to have a career which he found so fulfilling.

He was for many years an active member of the Richmondville Fire Department and valued the friends he made there. A voracious reader and puzzle solver, he also enjoyed spending time with his family, listening to music, camping, and playing cards with family and friends.

A service for the family will take place when travel restrictions have eased. Inurnment will be in the Richmondville Rural Cemetery. Friends who wish to memorialize John may make a gift to a charity of their choice. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the nursing home for their excellent care given to John.
