COBLESKILL- John A. Grossbeck, 71, of Myers Road, died suddenly on Thursday, August 2, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, NY.
Mr. Grossbeck was born February 4, 1936, in Paterson, NJ, and was the son of Lester A. and Maryemma (Brennan) Grossbeck.
He was a graduate of Central High School in Paterson, NJ, Rutgers University, Colorado State University, and obtained his Doctor of Education from Pennsylvania State University in 1972. He also served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1965.
Mr. Grossbeck was employed at the State University of New York at Cobleskill as a Professor of Animal Husbandry in the Agricultural Division from 1964 until his retirement in 1995. He was a Mason with the Free and Accepted Mason's Lodge 394 in Cobleskill, as well as Past Master, present Secretary, and the Grand Representative to the Grand Lodge of Utah. He was a member of the Shrine Band, the Motor Patrol, a Shepard, and a member of the Divan of Cyprus Shrine. He was the present Secretary/Treasurer of the Schoharie County Shrine Club, a member of the Scottish Rite and York Rite. Over the years he was involved with Cooperative Extension and Habitat for Humanity. He spent many hours volunteering at the Old Stone Fort in Schoharie.
He was predeceased by his father who died in 1994.
Mr. Grossbeck is survived by his wife, Charlotte Miers Grossbeck, whom he married on June 25, 1966; two sons; Eric Grossbeck of Long Beach, CA and Kevin Grossbeck of Mooresville, NC, one Grandson, Kevin A. ("KJ") Grossbeck, Jr. of Mooresville, NC; his mother, Maryemma Grossbeck of Howes Cave, NY; one sister, Helen (Michael) Oien of Chatham, NJ; and one brother, Martin L. (Jane) Grossbeck of Oak Ridge, TN.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at the Cobleskill United Methodist Church, Chapel Street in Cobleskill with the Rev. Bert Mayne and Rev. Laurel Philips officiating. Calling hours will be Monday evening, August 6, from 5 - 8 pm at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street Cobleskill, NY. A Masonic Service will be held at 8:00pm. Burial will be private.
