James Thompson

Cherry Valley- James C. Thompson, 75, formerly of Cherry Valley, died Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Cooperstown Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Otsego, NY.

Born January 17, 1943 in Cooperstown, he was the son of Lynn and Katherine (Cole) Thompson.

Drafted into the United States Army in 1964, he received an honorable discharge in 1965.

Jim was a lifelong area resident and served as Police Chief for the former Cherry Valley Police Department.  For numerous years, he was a gunsmith at Remington Arms where he took great pride in his skill to freehand design on many of the guns.  More recently, Jim was a janitor at the former Meadows Nursing Home in Otsego.

An avid outdoorsman, Jim was a member and caretaker of the Cherry Valley Fish & Game Club.

An amazing father and grandfather, his memories will be cherished by his five children:  Lorel (Stacy) VanBuren of Roseboom, Jimmy (Krista) Thompson of Richfield Springs, Jenna (Ron) Colasanti of Johnstown, and Patricia (Nicholas) Sack of Raymore, MO, Heather (Chris) Aird of Canajoharie; fourteen grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his brother, Lyle (Kim) Thompson of Cherry Valley; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at the Grace Episcopal Church, 32, Montgomery St., Cherry Valley, NY.  Spring interment will be held with military honors at 9:30 AM on Friday, May 4, 2018 in the Cherry Valley Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Jim’s name may be made to the Cherry Valley Fish & Game Club.

Arrangements are entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, NY.
