SHARON SPRINGS- James J. Nikolaus, 55, of Rosenberg Rd. in Sharon Springs, died Monday, March 31, 2008 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, NY after a brief illness.
Mr. Nikolaus was born June 19, 1952 in Cobleskill, NY and was the son of Ernest and Esther (Smith) Nikolaus.
He was a 1971 graduate of Sharon Springs Central School and a 1985 graduate of S.U.N.Y. @ Cobleskill. He was enlisted in the United States Army from 1975 until his honorable discharge in 1981. He re-enlisted in the United States Army National Guard in 1985 and retired in 2003 after more than 23 years of Military Service. He was most recently employed at Lancaster Development in Warnerville, NY as a Loader Operator.
Mr. Nikolaus was predeceased by his parents, and 1 brother, George Nikolaus.
He is survived by 2 sons; Mark J. Nikolaus of Charlotte, NC and TSGT Michael C. (Angela) Nikolaus of Great Falls, MT, who is currently serving in Iraq, 3 Grandchildren; Michael, Alex and Ashlynn Nikolaus all of Great Falls, MT, 4 sisters; Mary (Ray) Gates of Greene, NY, Thelma (Jim) Hornauer of Sharon Springs, NY, Sally (Larry) Crosby of Carlisle, NY, Ruth (Randy) Treadwell of Richlands, NC, 4 brothers; Gerald (Shari) Nikolaus of Eureka, MT, Paul (Betty) Nikolaus of Sharon Springs, NY, Charles (Mary Bowen) Nikolaus of Summit, NY, Philip (Pat) Nikolaus of Central Bridge, NY, 1 sister-in-law, Grace Nikolaus, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 11:00 am at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY. Calling hours will be from 9:30 to 11:00 am prior to the Funeral Service. Burial, with Full Military Honors, will be on Monday, April 7, 2008 at 1:00 pm at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Rd., Schuylerville, NY. At the request of the family, memorial contributions may be made to Sharon Springs Volunteer Rescue Squad, Sharon Springs, NY 13459.
