Middleburgh- James A. Nellis, 80, of Wells Ave., died Monday, November 9, 2015, at his residence.
Born July 8, 1935 in Middleburgh, he was the son of Earl and Nellie (Garner) Nellis.
Jim was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Middleburgh Central School and enlisting in the United States Army in 1954. He proudly served his country until receiving an honorable discharge in 1956. Jim was a member of the American Legion Timothy Murphy Post 248 in Middleburgh.
He retired from the New York State Dept. of Corrections, where he was a lieutenant at the Coxsackie Correctional Facility.
He volunteered for over sixty years with the Middleburgh Fire Dept. and was a member of MEVAC and the Rotterdam BPOE #2157.
Jim was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Humphrey; a brother, George Nellis; and a grandson, Tyler Ochs.
Survivors include his three children: Scott (Andrea) Nellis of Duanesburg, Jamie Van Buren of Gloversville, and Kim (Brett) Ostrander of Belleville, MI;eight grandchildren: Joshua and Sara Nellis, George and Pamela Van Buren, Christopher, Kayla, Cody, and Kassandra Ochs; and three great-grandchildren: Megan, Michelle and Matthew; and soon to be born: Carter.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 13, 2015 at Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh with Rev. Carol Coltrain of the Huntersland United Methodist Church officiating. Military honors will be accorded immediately following the service at the funeral home. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to take place from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday at the funeral home. A committal service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015 at Richmondville Rural Cemetery.
