Cobleskill- James P. Markley, 60, formerly of Cobleskill, died Sunday, January 12, 2014, at Albany Medical Center following a long illness.
Born May 21, 1953 in Cobleskill, he was the son of the late Joan (Case) and Philip A. Markley, Jr.
Jim attended the former Cobleskill Central School and the joined the United States Army. He received the National Defense Service Medal and commendation for Sharpshooter M16. Jim served his country from 1971 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1973.
He had worked as a laborer for the former Rua & Sons in Cobleskill and then moved to the Albany area where he worked various jobs.
He enjoyed playing the scratch-offs and socializing in and around the Albany area with his friends. Jim also visited with the Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center patients and staff there as well.
Survivors include his siblings: Phyllis Joslyn of Howes Cave, Linda (David) Butler and Laura Butler (Edwin Brown) all of Richmondville, Paul Markley (Janet Bialkowski), Larry (Anne) Markley and Jeffrey Markley, all of Cobleskill, Henry (Pat) Markley of Richmondville; two aunts: Judy Holmes of Cobleskill and Arlene Johnson of Freemont, MI; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill with Rev. Paul Messner officiating. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home prior to the service, from 5 to 6 PM. A committal service will be held with military honors at 1:00 PM on Friday, January 17, at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
