Durham: James F. Conroy, 82, died peacefully, Friday, June 13, 2014 at his home.
James was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 17, 1931 to Helen J. ( Driscoll) and James A. Conroy.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1951 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1955, and was stationed on Governor's Island.
James received his Masters in Education and taught Graphic Arts for the Irvington Board of Education in New Jersey.
James was a Boy Scout leader, a Girl Scout camp director, and assisted his wife with youth ministry at their church. He was an avid reader and enjoyed all types of books, along with a good crossword puzzle in his free time.
After his retirement eighteen years ago, he moved permanently to the family's summer home in Durham. He served as the Town of Durham Tax Assessor and he was a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Middleburgh.
James is survived by his wife: Martha A. (Wedlock) Conroy of Durham, whom he married on April 12, 1958; three daughters: Anne Marie (Robert) Conroy-Robinson of Freehold, Kathleen (Ed) Skinner of Cairo, Patricia (Paul) Garcia of Avenel, NJ; four sons: James (Nobuko) Conroy of Kailua, HI, John Conroy of Durham, Jason (Katie) Conroy of Greenville, Vincent Conroy of Durham; brother: David (Catherine) Conroy of East Brunswick, NJ; nine grandchildren: Justin Garcia, Jamie Garcia, James "Kimo" Conroy, David Conroy, Hunter Conroy, Andrew Howell, Ryan Skinner, Patricia Skinner, Matthew Skinner; many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 3:00PM on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Main St., Middleburgh with Fr. Thomas Holmes as celebrant. Inurnment will be private. Cremation took place at Vale Crematory, Schenectady.
