Summit- H. Edward Foote, 85, of Summit, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 25, at his home on the family farm.
He was born on the farm on October 19, 1933, to Julia (Danforth) Foote and Charles Foote and followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a fifth-generation dairy farmer. Later, he moved into construction with the Schenectady-based Sweet Associates, working some of the largest poured-concrete projects in the state.
He was a founding member of the Summit Fire Department and served as fire commissioner for 25 years. A longtime member of the Town Planning Board, he was instrumental in preserving the rural character of Summit. An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Ed knew and loved the fields and forests around the family farm. He shared his love of the land with family and friends and was always ready to lend a hand to those in need. Ed had a lifetime love for livestock, deer, birds, and the companionship of dogs, particularly his Chesapeake Bay retriever, Bridget, and Bichon Frise, Tessie.
He loved woodworking and shared many handcrafted boxes, bowls, and rolling pins with friends. He was an active member of the congregation at the West Fulton United Methodist Church for many years.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Janet L. (Bailey) Foote; sister Avis Smalley of Plattsburgh; sons John (Dana) Foote of Summit and Jeffrey (Natasha) Foote of Richmondville; grandchildren Benjamin Foote of Clifton Park, Katharine (Rick) Bottieri of Rotterdam, and Hannah-Rose, Charles, and David Foote of Richmondville. He was predeceased by his son James (Monica) Foote in 2014.
Calling hours will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 4, at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home on 171 Elm Street in Cobleskill. A memorial service will be held at the West Fulton United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 5, at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon at the Summit Fire Department.
Contributions in Ed’s memory can be made to the Summit Fire Department, Summit NY 12175, and the West Fulton United Methodist Church, PO Box 41, West Fulton NY 12194.
