Cobleskill-Harold B. Vroman, 92, of Cobleskill and longtime resident of Schoharie County, died in his sleep, Sunday, September 20, 2015. He had been living with his son Ted in Plattsmouth, NE and most recently with son, Dick in Edison, NJ.
Born on the family farm in the Town of Fulton, Schoharie County, New York on September 5, 1923, son of Myron Vroman and Ida M. Brewster. Graduated from Middleburgh Central School, 1942, Cornell University B.S. 1948, M.S. 1953
He was employed at Cornell doing research in Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology Depts. Served in NYS Extension Service as Agricultural Agent, Tompkins County. Worked for Beacon Milling Company 1953-1965 in Poultry Feed Research, Cayuga, NY while residing in Auburn, NY.
Harold accepted a teaching position in 1965, reaching a professorship at S.U.N.Y. Cobleskill and retiring in 1988 as Professor Emeritus, while residing in Cobleskill, NY.
He enjoyed travel with family and friends in the United States. Harold traveled frequently in Europe, and Israel, Russia, China, Australia & New Zealand. He was instrumental in starting the World Travelogue organization at the local college.
Other hobbies included local history, family genealogy and interest in early Dutch History in the Netherlands (Holland) and in New Netherlands.
He was active in the Cayuga County and Schoharie County chapters of NYS ARC; serving on the board of directors, on many committees, and as President.
Active in Schoharie County Historical Society including the Board of Directors and acting in support of the Old Stone Fort Museum Complex. He also served on local committees and regional historical societies. Member for many years of Cobleskill Rotary Club.
Worked and extended leadership in the creation of the Vroman's Nose Preservation Corporation as Executive Director for many years. He was a member of the Northern New York Hiking Club of the Long Path Hiking Trail.
Former member of Dutch Reformed Church in Middleburgh, NY and Zion Lutheran Church, Cobleskill, NY. He attended church at other places of residence in later years.
Predeceased by first wife, Marian Ruth (Worman) Vroman, May 26, 1975 and second wife, Doris (Mau) Vroman, September 24, 1996 and a son, David Bruce Vroman, July 1, 1991 at age 35.
Survivors include, son, J. Richard Vroman (Diana) of Edison, NJ, grandchildren - David T. Vroman (Monica), great-grandson Jay V. Vroman; and Janna R. Riccardi (Mike), son, Theodore T. Vroman (Carla) of Plattsmouth, NE, grandchildren - Regan E. Repasky (Kyle), Emmie R. Vroman, Benjamin D. Vroman. Surving stepchildren include Colleen (Hadsell) O'Brien of Broadalbin, NY, Cherie (Hadsell) Wessels of Springhill, VA and Walter J. Hadsell of Cobleskill, NY and 12 step-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River Street, Middleburgh, NY. Viewing 6-8pm, Friday, September 25, 2015 and Funeral 10:00 am Saturday, September 26, 2015.
Burial will be in the Middleburgh Cemetery in the family plot on Cotton-Hill Road.
