Summit- Fred R. VanValkenburg, 60, of Baldwin Road, Summit, New York passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at his home with his loving family at his side.

Born on October 12, 1962 in Cobleskill, NY he was the son of Richard E. VanValkenburg and Janet Becker VanValkenburg. He was a lifelong resident of the local area.

Fred was a member of the Summit Fire Department, serving as a fireman since the age of 16. He served as Commissioner for 5 years. He was also a member of Summit Conservation Club.

He was an avid outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and building houses.

Fred was employed for over 30 years at the Summit Highway Department and 25 plus years at the Summit Postal Service.

On June 30, 1990 Fred married Barbara Brooker.

His father, Richard E. VanValkenburg predeceased him on July 30, 2022.

Cherishing his memories are his wife, Barbara Brooker VanValkenburg of Summit, NY; mother, Janet R. VanValkenburg of Summit, NY; son, Anthony (Lindsay) VanValkenburg of Summit, NY, brother, Dean (Heather) VanValkenburg of Summit, NY; nephew, Nathan (Vicki) Davis of Canajoharie, NY; 4 nieces: Amanda VanValkenbug of Summit, NY, Samantha VanValkenburg of Colorado Springs, CO, Leah VanValkenburg of Summit, NY, Kayla Davis of Sharon, NY; 3 great-nephews: Matthew Davis, Ryan Davis both of Canajoharie, NY, Haysyn Lance of Colorado Springs, CO; great-niece, Ainsley VanValkenburg of Summit, NY; 2 "grandchildren": Izaiah Harris of Wappingers Falls, NY and Jaliyah Simmons of Cohoes, NY; and a sister-in-law, Jeannine (Harry) DeLong of Sharon,

The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, April 16, 2023 from 11:00-1:00pm at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY 12043. A funeral service will follow at 1:00pm at the funeral home with Judge Steve Gerhart officiating with a fireman's service immediately following. Cremation will follow the service at Vale Crematory.

Family and friends are welcome to join Fred’s family at the Summit Fire House for a reception following the service.
