Cobleskill- Franklin D. Fancher, 84, formerly of Cobleskill, died Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam, where he has been a resident for the past few years.
Born July 17, 1931 in Summit, he was the son of Byron and Nellie (Dauley) Fancher. Franklin was a lifelong area resident, growing up on the Fancher Home Farm in Hyndsville.
In 1952, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. and received an honorable discharge in 1953 so that he could come home to continue to work the family farm as his brother, Lewis, had died in a tragic automobile accident.
Franklin had also worked at the Becker Dairy Farm for a period of time. He was employed for twenty-three years at the Schoharie County Highway Department, retiring in 1986.
Although farming was his passion, Franklin did enjoy hunting as well.
Three sisters predeceased him: Fannie Fancher, Mary Bellinger, and Barbara Blodgett; and three brothers: Raymond, Lewis, and Joe Fancher.
Survivors include his siblings: Wade Fancher of Carlisle, Lois Wagner of Troy, and Grace Panella of Flowery Branch, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with Rev. Carol Coltrain of the Huntersland United Methodist Church officiating. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:30 PM. Burial will follow in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
