RICHMONDVILLE- E. Florence Hayes, 85, of High Street in Richmondville, NY, died peacefully at home on December 12, 2008.
Florence was born on March 4, 1923, in North Braddock, PA and was the daughter of Nestor and Esther (Semensky) Tylavsky.
She received a Master's Degree from Albany State Teachers College in 1946 and taught at the former Richmondville Central School for 32 years, retiring in 1978. She married David B. Hayes on March 11, 1948. He predeceased her in September of 1970. She was a member of the NYS and Schoharie County Retired Teachers Associations, the Richmondville Senior Citizens, and attended the Richmondville United Methodist Church. She was a long time member and secretary of the United Methodist Women and Chairperson of the Richmondville Methodist Church Quilt Show.
Florence was an avid reader and Mets fan, and enjoyed hunting and fishing with her husband, Dave. She studied Russian and piano after retiring and became a talented quilter. She was devoted to volunteering and mission work, and was a generous soul and bright spirit.
She is survived by her nieces Melissa Plemons of Altamont, NY and Heidi (Terry) Hollyof Rochester, NY, and her Grand-Nieces, Heather and Kyle.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 16, at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY with Rev. Marvin Batcher officiating. Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 15, from 5-7 at the Funeral Home. Burial will be held in the spring at Richmondville Rural Cemetery. A reception will follow the Funeral Service at the Richmondville United Methodist Church, 268 Main Street, Richmondville, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Neighborhood Center, Inc. (Group Work Refugees), 293 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13501
