Reverend Elsa A. Callender of Main Street, Richmondville, joined her Lord on Sunday, November 15th after a brief illness. She was born in Trinidad, West Indies on August 29, 1929 to Ena and John Sorias.
Elsa is survived by her son, Learie Peter Callender (Margo) of Oakland, CA and by her daughter, Natasha Foote (Jeff) of Richmondville NY. She is also survived by her siblings Vernon Sorias of Trinidad and Tobago, Bernice Miller of Florida, Angela Sorias Edwards, Glenister Sorias, Selwyn Sorias of Trinidad and Tobago, Judy Rolingson of Bahrain, Jean Sorias, Joan Sorias, and John Sorias also of Trinidad and Tobago. She was blessed with countless nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Her loving grandchildren are Brandon Callender of Oakland, CA. and Hannah-Rose, Charles, and David Foote of Richmondville.
After completing her training in midwifery at Ilford Maternity Hospital in London, England in 1964, Elsa continued a distinguished nursing career that spanned over 35 years. During that time, she received a Bachelor of Science, Nursing and Master of Science in Community Health Education. She was an RN at Montefiore Hospital for over 10 years, a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner at The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Health Center for 20 years. Among several of her personal and spiritual endeavors, Elsa was the director of the Riverside Church Mens Shelter (NYC), volunteered at numerous food drives, a weekday prayer and meditation leader and visited the sick and housebound. After being called into the ministry, Elsa enrolled in the New York Theological Seminary in 1995. She received her Masters Degree in Divinity in 1999 and was ordained to Word and Sacrament in May 2001 at Riverside Church, New York City. Reverend Callender provided spiritual leadership for churches in Little Falls and Calverton, Long Island. In 2007, she became the Protestant Chaplin at the Jewish Home and Hospital in Manhattan. She retired to Richmondville in October 2009 to be closer to her grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Riverside Church in Manhattan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverside Church Food Pantry, 490 Riverside Drive New York, NY 10027
