Sharon Springs- Elizabeth "Liz" Handy, 54, of Washington St., died Saturday, October 22, 2011 at her residence with her loving family at her side.

Born August 13, 1957 in Manhattan, she was a daughter of Irene (Blaney) Boyle and the late John H. Boyle.

Treasured most in Liz's life was time spent with her family as she was a loving wife, devoted mother, wonderful daughter, incredible aunt, sister-in-law, and friend. She knew how to enjoy the simple things in life, being involved in her son's, niece's and nephew's sports as an avid spectator. Liz enjoyed playing golf with family and friends as well. She had a remarkable way of making people feel special.

She assisted in the daily operations of her husband's business at Sharon Springs Garage as an office manager. She formerly served on the Sharon Springs village board as a trustee.

Liz is survived by her husband, David Handy, whom she married September 30, 1978; her son: Bradford Thomas Handy of Sharon Springs and his fiancée, Kristen Reese of Sherwood Forest, MD; her mother, Irene Boyle of Sharon Springs; brother, Michael (Craigen) Boyle of Jackson, MS; mother-in-law: Armandine Handy of Sharon Springs; brother-in-law: Douglas (Barbara) Handy of Sharon Springs; sister-in-law: Connie (Robert) Spohn of Cobleskill; niece: Renee Handy of Sharon Springs; and nephews: Mason Handy of Sharon Springs, Michael, Christopher, and Carter Boyle of Jackson, MS; and numerous friends.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October, 29, 2011 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 138 Washington Ave., Cobleskill with Rev. John Roos as celebrant. A period of visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 4 PM to 8 PM. Inurnment will be private.

Liz requested that in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to this newly established fund for Sharon Springs students. She believed that the youth leadership organizations were integral to her son Brad's success in college and work environment. Liz wanted all SSCS students to have equal opportunities to advance in these organizations. This fund will provide monetary assistance to FBLA/FFA members that qualify to attend higher-level competitions.
