Edward "Ned" Cotton Vanderburgh, 83, of Cherry Lane, died in comfort at home of natural causes on Monday, January 5, 2015 surrounded by loved ones.
Born April 28, 1931 in Brewster, NY, he was the youngest son of medical missionaries Dr. Alexander and Ruth D. (Ferguson) Vanderburgh.
Ned was a United States Navy veteran, proudly serving his country from 1951 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1955. He retired from AT&T at Bedminster, NJ, where he worked as a Design Engineer. He loved his job as staff supervisor, inventor and telephone pioneer. He would have done it for free, luckily they paid him well.
Sincere, humble, and full of love - he lived each day with an inescapable joy for life and learning. He respected everyone he met and nurtured creativity and curiosity in those around him. For this he will be remembered for what he was: a kind, gentle man, a tinker, a dreamer and a friend.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Emilie Marie (Lavoie) Vanderburgh, whom he married July of 1954; two daughters: Yva-Marie Scheid of Aspen, CO and Yvaine Melito of Hamilton, NJ; four grandchildren: Serene-Marie V. Washburn of Aspen, CO, Thom John Melito of San Jose, CA, Jean-Marie (and wife Katie) Scheid of Bellevue, WA, and Michael Melito of Hamilton, NJ; and a great-granddaughter: Arielle Washburn of Aspen, CO.
Services will be held privately at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Our heartfelt thanks go to Susan Bartell, Christina DelCoro, Linda Garner, Jill Hanley, Adrianne Niesz, Dana Terefenko, and Cobleskill Hospice (especially Mary Roe) for all of their tender loving care and encouragement.
