Summit- Edward G. Oles completed his life journey on Feb. 17, 2016. Ed had been ill for a few years and died at home with his wife, Patricia, and son, Eddie by his side.
He was born in the City of Yonkers, NY to Thomas F. Oles and his mother, Helen (Carey) Oles. Both parents are deceased along with his two brothers, Gerald and Robert Oles.
Ed attended school in Yonkers and left to join the US Army. That's what many young men did during that time. He first deployment was in Germany and when he returned home, he was then sent to Gorhm, NH and took part in experiments testing wear and tear of uniforms, shoes, and boots. Also testing rations to see how long soldiers could live on these while in battle.
He met his wife, Patricia, in 1950 when he left the service and they were married in September of 1956. They had one son, Eddie.
Ed worked at Brown Bros. Garage and then for Globe Union in Yonkers, driving tractor trailer delivering batteries for Sears stores. After Globe Union closed, Ed worked driving dump trucks for different companies and then became self employed.
He and his family moved to Summit in 1978 after spending summers there and decided to make it their home.
Ed belonged to the Shamokin Rod & Gun Club in Phoenicia, NY for thirty years. He also enjoyed his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was a great bowler and later gave that up. He did do some horseback riding with his wife and he enjoyed going with her to the Split Rock Academy in Mt. Vernon.
Ed leaves behind his wife, Patricia of 59 years and son, Eddie; his sisters: Doris Perez of Wurtsboro, NY, Eileen (Conrad) Heinz of Mt. Carmel, NY, Dolores Teddy and Joan Oles, both of CA; a brother: Thomas (Therese) Oles of CA; and many nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, c/o Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center, 113 Holland Ave., Albany, NY 12208.
