Dorothy J. Johns, 98, of Cobleskill, NY, a resident at Early Woodlands and recently a patient at Capstone Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Amsterdam, peacefully entered the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 1, 2024.
Born December 10, 1925, in Stamford, NY, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary (Mackey) Mattice. Following graduation from Stamford High School, she met Ralph Lincoln Johns, son of Alfred and Grace Johns. After a time of courtship, they were married on July 8, 1944, and settled on the family farm located on Truax Road, Charlottevlle, NY, where Dorothy went from a “city girl” to a “country girl.” Ralph and Dorothy were married for 50 years until his passing on January 22, 1994.
Dorothy’s Christian faith was a major part of her life, and along with her husband, she was an active member of the First Summit Baptist Church in Charlotteville, NY. She served in many capacities, such as teaching children, working in the women's ministries, helping with church social events, playing the piano for the choir and congregation singing. Her hospitality skills were evident in the many meals provided for guests who were invited or simply stopped by her home, as well as family gatherings and reunions. Dorothy was active in the Summit Grange and the Home Bureau. She worked as a bookkeeper at the egg factory in Charlotteville, and in later years volunteered at the Cobleskill Hospital.
Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law; brothers and sisters-in-law: Clifford (Nancy), Burton (Norma), Elton (Kay); sisters and brothers-in-law: Freida (Herbert) McCumber, Alice Elizabeth, Mary (Kenneth) Butler; also brothers-in-law: William Alexander and Donald Hyers; and great-granddaughter, Isabella Johns.
Dorothy is survived by her two children: son, Ralph Walter (Maureen) Johns of Schoharie, NY and Linda (Dean) Spencer of Forest, VA; four grandchildren: Jeffery (Jennifer) Johns, Julie Johns (Matt) Loder, Matthew (Jeanie) Spencer, Mark (Brianne) Spencer, Adam (Erica) Spencer; thirteen great-grandchildren; and sisters: Leta Hyers of Manchester, NH and Leona Alexander of Davenport, NY; and many loved nieces and nephews.
On Saturday, May 18, 2024, friends and family are invited to a period of visitation at 11:00 am, followed by a funeral service at noon, at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY. Interment will be held at the Charlotteville Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial gifts be given to a favorite charity or church.
