Dorothy Erland

Summit- Dorothy Erland passed away on December 14, 2012 at her home on Davis Road in Summit, surrounded by her family and friends. She was 89.

She was born in Brooklyn, NY on February 9, 1923 to Ole and Ingeborg Reusmann. She was predeceased by one brother, Chester.

She was married to Arne Hviid and has two children from that marriage, John Hviid and Jeannette Hviid, both of whom live in Summit. After going across Europe with General Patton, Arne came home from WW II and died of cancer at age 39 in 1957.

Dorothy married Warren Melby in 1959. They had a son, Warren Roy Melby, Jr., who currently lives in Altamont with his family. Warren died in 1964 and then Dorothy moved to Summit.

She was an employee at SUNY in Cobleskill. She met Walter Erland at the college and they married in October of 1969. Walter had two adult sons, Peter Demery and Joseph Lazurek. They had married and moved away before Dorothy and Walter married. He had two daughters at home, Elsie Erland (Trafton) and Ida Erland (Belknap). Dorothy retired in 1982.

She was a member of the First Summit Baptist Church in Charlotteville and accepted Christ as her saviour in October of 1983 at the funeral of her best friend, Jeannette Armao.

Walter predeceased her in February of 2011.

Dorothy leaves behind six children, eighteen grandchildren, and thirty-six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012 at First Summit Baptist Church in Charlotteville with Rev. Grant Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Charlotteville Rural Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
