Doris Elaine (Buck) Veith passed peacefully after a brief illness on April 29, 2024.
Doris was born in Hobart, NY on January 19, 1935 to Charles N. and Evelyn (Weeks) Buck. Shortly after, the family moved to Jefferson, NY and the Buck name has been a fixture on the North Road since that time.
With the family settled on the North Road, Doris grew up on the family farm alongside her two sisters, Ellen and Donna, and brother, Charles.
Doris’ life would change dramatically after graduating from Jefferson High School with her decision to take a summer job at the Sugar Maples Resort in Maplecrest, NY. What started as just a summer job would turn out to be the beginning of a 72-year love affair with Richard “Dick” Veith, whom she met while they were both employed at the resort.
After a four-year courtship, as Doris attended SUNY Oneonta and Dick the University of Florida, they were married on June 17, 1956. Their union would last just short of 68 years.
Doris graduated from SUNY Oneonta in 1956, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics education. After graduation, Doris taught in the Durham Central School and Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School districts.
In 1961 Dick purchased his family’s half of the summer resort where they met. Doris’ life turned away from education to running the kitchen of the resort where meals were prepared to feed 520 guests and 120 employees daily. Doris’ efficient organizational skills and hard work kept the business pantries full, the stoves hot, and the guests and employees fed for 27 years.
During this same time the family grew and three children came along. Doris was a devoted, caring and loving mother.
In 1978 Doris and Dick decided to leave the resort business. The business was sold and the Veith family moved to Cobleskill.
Shortly thereafter, Doris returned to education as a teacher in SUNY Cobleskill’s Hospitality and Food Service Department, where she stayed until her retirement.
Doris was a devout Christian and attended Sonrise Bible and Charleston Four Corners churches for many years.
Doris is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Richard “Dick” Veith; son, R. Sherwood Veith (Deborah), daughter, Allison Parker (Roger); grandchildren: Joshua Veith (Trista), Rachel Gillan (Jeffrey), Matthew Manda, Anastasia Manda, great-grandchildren Harper Veith, Jules Veith, Ava Gillen; sister, Ellen Strong (Sherwood), and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family.
Doris was predeceased by her daughter, Karalee Manda (Paul), and her siblings: Charles and Donna.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, May 6, 2024, from 10:00-11:00 am at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am with Pastor Brett Popp officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Jefferson following the funeral service.
