Middleburgh: Don was born in Middleburgh on September 4, 1935 and passed away in Fresno, California on December 1, 2014 after a 26-month courageous battle with cancer.
He was the son of the late William and Ethel La Mont of Middleburgh. Don is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Patricia (Gnat) La Mont of Fresno, CA; his brother, Major Jerry La Mont of Middleburgh; several sisters and brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his dear friend (who he considered his other brother) Joaquin Jiminez of Middletown, NY.
He attended Middleburgh Central School, graduating in 1953. He went on to Syracuse University graduating with a BA degree in Broadcasting in 1957. He later earned a MA degree in Mass Communications from California State University, Fresno, CA.
Don always felt privileged to have had two separate careers that he enjoyed immensely. His first career began as a copywriter at Banger Advertising in Albany, NY. From there he went on to work at WAST TV in Albany, NY, first as Traffic Manager and later as Promotion Manager. After moving to CA, he was employed at KMJ TV in Fresno, CA as Promotion Manager. After completing his Master's Degree in Mass Communication, he began teaching Mass Communication at California State University and Fresno Community College.
After retiring, he continued free-lance writing, public relations and advertising. For the last ten years he not only performed in Fresno City College's New Wrinkles (a Senior Broadway Style review), he also wrote the shows and directed all the promotion and public relations.
Don's avocation was horticulture. He could make anything grow, and loved sharing his plants and his vast knowledge. He was a long time member of the Fresno Cactus and Succulent Society and served as president for several years. He also was a Certified Master Gardner with the UCCE Master Gardner's program of Fresno County.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the United Methodist Church, 281 Main St., Middleburgh with Rev. Mary Ellen Moore officiating. A period of visitation will be held at church prior to the service beginning at 9:30 AM. Burial will follow in Middleburgh Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, Middleburgh and the Mereneness-Putnam Funeral Home, Cobleskill.
