Middleburgh- Donald E. Conklin, Jr., 64, of Main Street, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at Cobleskill Regional Hospital.
Born November 14, 1946 in Niskayuna, NY, he was the son of Donald E. and Mildred (Porter) Conklin, Sr.
He was raised in Berne and was a 1965 graduate of Berne-Knox High School.
Donald was also a United States Navy Veteran serving from 1965 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1969. He served three tours on the USS Coral Sea and was decorated with a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, and an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Since 1972 when he moved to Middleburgh, he was a member of the American Legion Timothy Murphy Post #248.
Donald was employed as a machine operator at Loretex at Northeastern Industrial Park in Guilderland.
He served on the board for the Middleburgh Rod & Gun Club as well as the Middleburgh Little League. Donald participated in the fishing derby, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and swapping stories with his buddies. He also found pleasure in reading about his Dad's experience in World War II while serving in Europe.
Survivors include his wife of thirty-nine years, Jennifer (Briggs) Conklin; his five children: Matthew Conklin of Cobleskill, Daniel Conklin of Coxsackie, Sue Conklin of Fultonham, Andrew Conklin of Middleburgh, and Julie Conklin of Middleburgh; his granddaughter, Alexis Skowfoe, who brought him great joy; three brothers: Clark (Judy) Conklin of Knox, Ike (Diane) Conklin of E. Berne, and Mark (Denise) Conklin of Esperance; an uncle: Mace Porter of Berne; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh, with Rev. Peter J. DeBartolo of the Gallupville Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. The American Legion Timothy Murphy Post # 248 will conduct a service, following the Memorial service. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday, prior to the service. Interment will be private.
