Denis J. Handy, 83, of Franzen Road, Richmondville, New York died Monday, August 24, 2026, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
Born on June 22, 1943, in Cobleskill, NY, he was the son of John Clark Handy and Elizabeth Bowers Handy. He was a graduate of Cobleskill Central School, Class of 1961 and was a lifelong resident of the local area.
Denis retired from Lancaster Development as an equipment supervisor. He also ran the Dauley farm for many years and was an amazing equipment operator right up until the end, especially with bulldozers.
Denis had a generous spirit, always donating his time to those in need. He was also a loving grandfather.
Denis lit the lives of everyone around him with his laughter and jokes. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed playing pranks. He was a NASCAR fan, with Dale Earnhardt being a favorite. In his younger years, he enjoyed rebuilding muscle cars. Denis loved to socialize. He liked to visit the local diners and was a member of the coffee clutch at Mrs. K's in Middleburgh.
Denis was married to Janet A. Dauley on April 26, 1969. She preceded him in death on May 5, 2015. He was also predeceased by his parents; stepmother, Marion Handy; sister, Diane Egnor; brother, Gerald Handy.
Denis is survived by his children, Dennis James Handy, II (Angela) of Richmondville, NY, Brian C. Handy (Valerie) of Richmondville, NY, Deborah Handy of Clifton Park, NY, Frances Judd of Cooperstown, NY; brothers, Jon Handy (Sally) of Richmondville, New York, Douglas Handy (Shari Carr) of Schoharie, NY; half-brother, Jeff Handy of Sharon Springs; half-sister, Connie Zwick (Charlie) of Sloansville, NY; grandchildren, Evan Ward Handy, John Clark Handy, Hannah and John Judd, Caroline (Ryan) Shepler, Taylor Shafer; great granddaughters, Victoria and Elouise Shepler; in-laws, Cindy Handy, and Rodney Egnor; as well as several nieces, and nephews.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 10:00AM-1:00PM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 265 Main Street, Richmondville, NY 12149 with a memorial service following at 1:00PM. Burial will take place in Summit Cemetery.
