Carlisle- David Stanley Elwood, 88, of S. Crosby Road, Carlisle, New York died Sunday, February 19, 2023 at River Ridge Living Center in Amsterdam, following a short stay.
Born on September 8, 1934 in Ridgewood, NJ, he was the son of Elsworth Stanley Elwood and Helen Buhlman Elwood.
Growing up in New Jersey, Dave enjoyed fishing and trapping and working on local dairy farms. Dave graduated from Ramsey High School, Class of 1952. He was very involved in high school sports, both on the football and basketball teams. The day after graduation, they moved to Carlisle, New York where he and his father ran the family farm. While attending classes at SUNY Cobleskill he met Mary at a school dance. They were married July 28, 1956. Dave retired from farming in 1987. He and Mary had a log cabin built. Dave took much pride in helping to build that log cabin they would enjoy since 1987. He took great pride in his yard work and gardening. He spent much time planting trees and blueberry bushes. He mastered the art of making tomato sauce and blueberry jam. He was also an avid coin collector.
He and Mary enjoyed many fall trips to the Adirondacks. His family was very important to him.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Elwood; grandson, Benjamin Derr; sister, Susan Schultz; and son-in-law, Dennis Myers.
David is survived by his daughters, Betsy Elwood (Jim Walker) of Rotterdam, NY, Andrea Myers (John Hart) of Carlisle, NY, Heather O'Neil and Jim of Newburgh, NY; granddaughter, Shannon Derr of Central Bridge, NY; sister, Ann Elwood of Cardiff California.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, February 24, 2023 from 1:00-2:00PM at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY 12043. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 2:00PM at the funeral home with Rev. Burt Mayne officiating. Burial will take place in Carlisle Cemetery at a later date.
