David Bugler

Cobleskill- Father David R. Bugler, 70, of North Grand Street, died Monday, July 27, 2009 at his residence.

He was born September 8, 1938, in Ontario, Canada. After twenty-six years in the publishing industry, David returned to his native Canada for ordination to the deaconate by the Right Rev. John Bothwell in Hamilton, Ont., and the priesthood by the Right Rev. Henry Hill in Kingston, Ont.

Father Bugler had earned a bachelor's of science in English at American University in Washington, D.C. and attended both Philadelphia Divinity School and George Mercer Jr. Memorial School of Theology in Garden City, Long Island, NY, graduating in 1969. After a year in the direct mail industry, he assumed full time leadership at the parishes of Leeds-Rear, Canada, and the parish based in Cardinal, Ont.

In 1982, he became rector of Greenville-Rensselear, NY parishes in the diocese of Albany, NY. A time was spent as interfaith religious liaison for New York's Martin Luther King Institute for Non Violence in Albany, NY. He then returned to parish work at St. Paul's in Troy, NY and his final years of active ministry were at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Cobleskill and as Sunday supply at St. Paul's Church in West Middleburgh, NY.

Father Bugler's accomplishments included beginning the parish based Leadership Community Resource Center in Canada and non violence education in the United States.

He was predeceased by his parents, Rev. William G. Bugler and Elsie (Ames) Bugler, and brother, Bernard W. Bugler all of Oakville, Ont.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Miller of Cobleskill; two sons: Stephen Andrew (Kim) Bugler of Albany, and Jonathan Daniel (Moira) Bugler and their daughters: Bennet and Brooklyn all of Seattle; and his sons' mother, Meg Bugler of Delmar.

A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at St. James Church, 305 Main St., Oneonta, NY. Celebrant will be The Right Rev. Bishop Love of Albany and preacher will be Rev. Kenneth Hunter, Rector of St. James Church. Friends are invited to a period of visitation from 5 to 7 PM on Wednesday at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, NY. Cremation will follow Mass, with inurnment at St. Jude's Cemetery, Oakville, Ont.
