Daniel Schaffer
Cobleskill- Daniel Schaffer, 55, of Bridge St., died Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown following a short illness.
Born August 24, 1956 in Cobleskill, he was a son of Ivan and Cecelia (Smegoski) Schaffer. Dan was a lifelong area resident, graduating from the former Cobleskill Central School.
He served as a deputy sheriff for Schoharie County Sheriff's Department for almost twenty-five years.
Dan was a member of the Cobleskill B.P.O.E. #2040 and an exempt member of the Cobleskill Volunteer Fire Dept.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, David Schaffer.
Survivors include his wife, Colleen (VanDerwerken) Schaffer, whom he married May 22, 1982; his two children: Sara Mae Elizabeth Schaffer and Zachary Daniel Schaffer, both of Cobleskill; three sisters: Susan Rumph of Cobleskill, Joann Vochon and Melinda Scorzelli, both of Florida; and two brothers: Andrew Schaffer of Florida and Michael Schaffer of Stamford, NY.
A funeral service, which will include an Elks service, will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 138 Washington Ave., Cobleskill with Rev. Marvin Batcher officiating. Family and friends are also invited to call from 6 to 8 PM on Friday at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
