Cobleskill-Clifford A. Helme, Jr., 90, of Donat's Brow, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at his home with his loving family at his side.

Born May 6, 1925 in Cobleskill, he was the son of Clifford A. and Evelyn (Warner) Helme, Sr. Prior to graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp., proudly serving his country from 1943 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.

Clifford continued his education at SUNY Cobleskill where he received his associate's degree and was the captain of the college basketball team. He went on to work the Helmehurst Farm in Hyndsville for several years. In 1991, he retired as Instructional Support Assistant at SUNY Cobleskill after twenty-six years of employment.

From the time he was a young adult, Clifford bowled in various leagues locally until he was 88 years old. He was a sport enthusiast, avid gardener and card player of solitaire and rummy. Clifford enjoyed camping and fishing, but most importantly, time spent with his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of the Cobleskill United Methodist Church and the Cobleskill Historical Society.

He married Ruth Coons on May 30, 1947 and she predeceased him on Dec. 5, 2011. His brother, Robert Helme, also predeceased him.

Survivors include his six children: Susan Payne of Indian Valley, CA, Don (Susan) Helme of Cobleskill, Holly Hauser of Cobleskill, Stephen (Sandy) Helme of Port Orange, FL, Faith (Mark) Nadeau of Cobleskill and David (Kimberly) Helme of Los Angeles, CA; his sister: Shirley H. Welsh of Ballston Spa; eleven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill where a period of visitation will be held prior to the service, from 2 to 3 PM. Inurnment with military honors will follow in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Barbara Ibarra.
