Gilboa- Clement Varrecchia (Clem), age 89, of Gilboa went to Heaven on March 29, 2016.

He was born in San Martino, Italy on June 10, 1926, the son of Fortunato Varrecchia and Anna Mastellone Varrecchia. Clem came to the United States when he was one and grew up in Brooklyn, NY. He attended the Brooklyn School of Automotive Trades.

He was drafted and served in WWII from 1944 to 1946. He was in the Air Corps in addition to serving as a nose gunner on a B24, he was an MP. Clem was very proud of his country and wore his WWII veterans' hat all the time. After the war, he owned a gas station and auto parts store. His final career was as a union truck driver, Teamster Local 807, for Airweld Compressed Gases in Freeport, Long Island. He was so proud of this and one of his quotes was, "everything you see or touch has been on a truck". After retiring from Airweld, he moved upstate to this area.

Clem was also very active in the Retreads Motorcycle Club. He was a member of the Conesville Mountain Top Seniors and the Summit Seniors. Other memberships include the NRA, Suffolk County Archers, and the American Legion.

Clem was predeceased by two sisters, a brother, and his first wife, Margaret LoGuidice Varrecchia.

He is survived by his six children: Edward Varrecchia, Roseann Broughton, Joan Muller, Frederick Varrecchia, Clement Varrecchia and Anna Magee. He is also survived by his two sisters: Anna Esposito and Matilda Spasato.

He married Elsa Van Glad and is survived by her and her three sons: Anthony Van Glad, Andrew Van Glad, and Matthew Van Glad. Between both families, there are sixteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his best friend, Pete Rossi, who is number 1.

There will be a memorial service and celebration of his life on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at 2 PM in the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge, NY. Any memorial contributions should be sent to the Gilboa United Methodist Church or the Grand Gorge Rescue Squad.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home of Middleburgh and Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.
