Cobleskill- Chester "Chet" Ira Slater, 89, of Lark St., died Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at Ellis Hospital after being stricken at his residence.
Born February 5, 1927 in Cobleskill, he was the son of Austin and Lena Mae (Hadsell) Slater.
Chet was a United States Army veteran, proudly serving during World War II. He was decorated with the Army of Occupation Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. When he came home, Chet joined the Fred L. Stilson American Legion and the Cobleskill VFW.
He continued to serve in his community as the Schoharie County Fire Coordinator for several years and was instrumental in starting the Schoharie County Fire Investigation Team known as "Fives". Chet served as chief of the Cobleskill Volunteer Fire Dept. for two separate terms, as well as an officer in the department for 30 plus years, becoming a life member.
He retired from the Best Western in Cobleskill after working several years in maintenance.
In his leisure, Chet enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling.
His wife, Jane (Eckerson) Slater, who died February 18, 2002, predeceased him.
His son, Christopher Slater, survives him.
A private graveside service with military honors will take place at Cobleskill Rural Cemetery. There will be no visitation hours.
