Summit- Charles L. Nikolaus, 67, of State Route 10 in Summit, died on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Albany Medical Center in Albany after a short illness.
Charles was born October 3, 1946 in Cobleskill, and was the son of Ernest and Esther (Smith) Nikolaus.
He worked for 20 years for New York State Department of Corrections at Camp Summit Shock Incarceration as the Water Plant Operator until its closing, and was the owner of Summit Backflow Inspection. Mostly, Charles enjoyed traveling, fishing, and spending time with family.
He was predeceased by three brothers, James, Gerald, and George.
Charles is survived by his soul mate of 24 years, Mary Bowen of Summit, his children, Brenda (Douglas) Darling-Nikolaus of Cobleskill, Ann (Randy) Hendrix-Stone of Cobleskill, Joseph Nikolaus of Middleburgh, Ernest (Sharon) Nikolaus of New Jersey, Grandchildren, Catilyn Nikolaus, David and Anthony Nikolaus, Jacob and Jared Somers, Ethan and John Hendrix, Maggie Stone, Caitlyn and Matthew Nikolaus, his siblings, Mary (Raymond) Gates of Greene, NY, Thelma (James) Hornauer of Sharon Springs, Sally (Larry) Crosby of Carlisle, Ruth (Randy) Treadwell of Richland, NC, Paul (Carol) Nikolaus of Corinth, NY, Philip (Patricia) Nikolaus of Newport News, VA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Mary's children, JoAnn (Neal) Wilklow of Altamont, NY, Patricia (Bryan) Llewellyn of Cocoa, FL, Charles Bowen of Summit, Barbara (Joseph) Terracciano of Summit, her grandchildren, Danielle (Marc) Chiles, Beth (Kous) Ait Omessauod, Amanda (Roman) Bowen, Jacqueline Wilklow, Cassandra Wilklow, Anthony (Gabriella)Bowen, Angelena Terracciano, Nicholas Terracciano, and her great grandchildren, Annabelle Childs, Adam Childs, Noah Dunlop and Aksil Ait Omessauod.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 8 PM at Palmer and Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River Street, Middleburgh, with Rev. MaryEllen Moore of the Middleburgh United Methodist Church officiating. Family and friends are invited to a period of visitation to be held prior to the funeral service from 4-8 pm. Burial will be private.
