Charles Nelson,
Charles Edward Nelson, Sr, of Middleburgh, NY, passed away suddenly on September 24, 2010 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. He was 78.
Chuck was born January 9, 1932 in Elmira, NY to Carl and Vesta Nelson. As a teenager he worked as a farmhand in Morrisville, NY where he graduated from Morrisville-Eaton Central School in 1950. He enlisted into the United States Marine Corps in 1952. After being honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1955, he returned to Morrisville, attending SUNY with an Automotive Technology major, receiving his AAS in 1957.
After completing his studies, Chuck returned to Wappingers Falls where he had married the former Jean Margaret Cornell on April 26, 1957. He was employed at IBM from 1965 until his retirement in 1987, working variously at the East Fishkill and Poughkeepsie plants. After retirement the Nelsons lived successively in Mariahville, Maine and Pleasant Valley, NY. before settling in Middleburgh. Mrs. Nelson predeceased her husband in 2003.
Chuck is survived by a sister, Christine Houck and her husband John of Plant City, Fla, a brother-in-law, Richard Liddle of Zephyr Hills, Fla, two sons, Charles Edward Nelson Jr. and his wife Lisa of Poughkeepsie, NY and Joseph Robert Nelson of Lagrangeville, NY, three foster children, Linda Foote of Poughkeepsie, Nancy Endress of Walton, NY, and Terri Shook of Poughkeepsie, an adopted son, Bruce Terrell and his wife Robin of Middleburgh, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In his final years, Chuck formed and served as captain of the Mountain Williams bowling team with Mr. Terrell, part of the Sunday Night Mixed league at the Middleburgh Lanes. An avid outdoorsman, he spent much of his retirement hunting, fishing and camping, living his life to the fullest.
There will be no calling hours. Memorial and burial services will be privately held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh and Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.
