Cobleskill- Mrs. Catherine, "Kaye" M. Shumway, 85, of Settles Mountain Road, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown following a brief illness.
She was born October 2, 1922 in Howes Cave, the daughter of Walter and Minnie (Turner) Barner. Mrs. Shumway was a life long area resident and had retired from the former Cobleskill Central School District where she was an employee in the cafeteria.
She had attended the First Baptist Church in Cobleskill since 1946 and became a member in 1961. Mrs. Shumway had served as a deaconess since 1998 and taught Sunday school for many years. She was the only charter member survivor of the VFW Post 5088 Auxiliary, where she also served as past president, chaplain, and was active in other positions. She had belonged to the American Legion Fred L. Stilson Post 57 Auxiliary for the past 36 years. Mrs. Shumway was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America, a charter member of the local hospital auxiliary serving with the Amber and Zircon Units, and was a 50 plus year member, and oldest, of the Cobleskill Fire Dept. Auxiliary.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Charles Decker, Sr., and her second husband, Orion "Stuby" Shumway.
Survivors include 3 daughters: Sharon (Ernest) Probst of Cobleskill, Carol (Kenneth) Jewett of Poestenkill, and Linda Shumway (Herbert VanNatten) of Howes Cave; her son, Charles (Cynthia) Decker of Caroga Lake; her brother, Newton Barner of Port St. Lucie, FL; 5 grandchildren: Michelle (John) Adams of Clifton Park, Shari (Herbert) Amey of Cobleskill, Riana Shumway of Richmondville, Jeff Probst of Cobleskill, and Brendal Shumway of Schenectady; 11 great-grandchildren; her companion, Palmer (Shorty) Beacraft of Worcester, NY, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 12, 2008 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home 171 Elm St. Cobleskill with Rev. Ken Sisson of the First Baptist Church officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
