Cobleskill- Carl Basil Putnam was born on March 23, 1930, in Warnerville, NY, to parents Raymond Arthur Putnam and "Vera" Lucretia Hathaway Putnam.
Carl attended the Warnerville one room school house as a child. In April 1939 the family moved to nearby Beards Hollow and Carl attended Richmondville Grade School. Carl was in 4-H for years and showed white-faced Hereford cattle. He graduated as Salutatorian of his class in the former Richmondville Central School in1949.
Carl worked at Harder's Refrigeration before entering the United States Army through the draft with his brother, Raymond, in February 1951. Neither brother served overseas. Carl was trained as a paratrooper and became a medic. Carl also served six years in the active reserve after his initial two year active military service. Carl was in the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, KY for two years.
After leaving the armed services, Carl lived several years working as a dairy farmer on the family farm beside the "Little White Church" in Beards Hollow. Attending August services there for many years with his family, he was known for the ringing of the church bell in the church's balcony.
In 1968, Carl moved to Cobleskill and joined in partnership with an elder brother, Victor Berosus Putnam, who passed away September 11th, 2004. Both ran a partnership dairy farm which was later incorporated as an LLC in 2006. Carl resided there the rest of his life; living in semi-retirement beginning in late 2009, early 2010.
He died in Cobleskill Regional Hospital during a two week stay, and was lovingly attended at his bedside by his brother, Raymond, and sister-in-law, Frances Putnam, Victor's widow, who sat all day with Carl until passing on November 20th, 2010 at 5:10 AM.
Carl is survived by older siblings: Raymond Louis Putnam, retired dairy farmer; Harold Arthur Putnam, retired handyman, both of Beards Hollow and eldest brother, Quintin Reginald Putnam, ex-marine, now a monastic, Brother Bholananda, of Self-Realization Fellowship headquartered in Los Angeles, CA. Brother Bholananda serves at the Phoenix, AZ ashram center. Also surviving him are nephews, a niece, and their children.
A private memorial gathering of the family will be held in Cobleskill.
