Richmondville (Schoharie County)- Calvin D. Erland, 84, of Bear Gulch Road, died Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at Cobleskill Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Born July 11, 1925 in Port Jefferson, NY, he was a son of Charles and Elsie (Smith) Erland..
Calvin was a veteran of the United States Navy serving from 1942 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He was a heavy equipment operator for the Town of Southampton and retired in 1982. He and his wife moved from Port Jefferson to Richmondville at that time. Calvin was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War, and a former member of the Fraternal Organization of Eagles Aeries of Cobleskill Lodge #2695. He was also a member of BCCA (Beer Can Collectors Association).
Calvin was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Oettinger Erland, whom he married Nov. 2, 1947. She died February 20, 2009.
Survivors include his daughter: Carolyn Bustinza of New Braunfels, TX; a son: Robert Erland of Stamford, NY; two brothers: Albert Erland of Cobleskill and Walter Erland of Stamford, NY; one Granddaughter, Melodie Brower of Boston, MA; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with Rev. Donald Klob officiating. Friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010. A committal service with full military honors will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday at Southampton Cemetery, Southampton, NY.
