Esperance- On September 1st, 2025, we lost a person who was a major influence on many lives, when Bernard "Bernie" Armata passed away unexpectedly. He was primarily known for his love of his dogs and his years involved in Sheepdog trials, both as a handler and a much-respected Judge. Many will remember seeing him at trials with his "Bernie Buddy"- Coco, the dachshund- trotting happily everywhere behind him.
Bernie was known for his astute one-liners and perceptive comments that were always "to the point". Perhaps less known was his interest and extensive knowledge of history, politics and music, including playing the trumpet in the Esperance band.
In 2018, Bernie retired as the Executive Director of the Herkimer County Office of the Cornell Cooperative Extension; his last professional position that followed ever more responsible positions within the Cooperative Extension. He held a master's degree in environmental science and toxicology from SUNY Albany.
Bernie and Barbara, his wife and partner ran the popular and successful Taravale Farm and Kennel in Esperance, NY for many years and retired from that in order to spend more time working with their own dogs.
Bernie is survived by Barbara, his wife of 38 years; his sisters, Katherine (Armata) Caffrey, Laurie Armata and Dorothy (Armata) Daniels; nephews, Matthew Armata and Andy Caffrey; niece, Erin Caffrey; and his much-loved border collies, Dart, Gwen and Chrome.
A celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date.
Contributions in memory of Bernard Armata may be made to Burtonsville Fire Department, 2053 Burtonsville Road, Esperance, NY 12066.
