Cobleskill- Arthur Newton Shuart, 89, died Sunday, January 18, 2015 at home after a long illness.
Arthur was born February 25, 1925 Suffern, NY to Theodore and Blanche (Dutcher) Shuart. After graduating from Ramsey High School, he worked for Lederle Laboratories and a lumber yard in New Jersey. He married Edna May Derbyshire of Woodcliff Lake, NJ on June 29, 1946. In 1952, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Arthur worked on a cattle ranch. Since his heart's desire was to have his own farm for his family, in 1953, they purchased a dairy farm on Toback Road in Sloansville, NY. Then in 1960, Arthur and Edna purchased a larger dairy farm on Ice Cave Road in Carlisle, NY. He operated the farm until their retirement in May 1991. After his retirement, he spent time on his hobby of researching and recording the Shuart and Derbyshire genealogies.
Arthur was predeceased by Edna May Derbyshire in 1999, his loving wife of 53 years.
He was the devoted father of six children: Thomas (Rose) Shuart of Gardiner, MT; Lynne (Steve) Gorsin of Rotterdam, NY; Paul (Tamera) Shuart of Howes Cave, NY; Nancy (LaVerne) Bolster of Carlisle, NY; William (Melissa) Shuart of Lakeland, FL; Wesley Shuart of Cobleskill, NY; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He also has one surviving brother, Curtis (Regina) Shuart of Airmont, NY.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday with a period of visitation from 10 AM to 11 AM prior at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Private burial will be Thursday in Airmont Lutheran Cemetery in Suffern, NY.
