Howes Cave- Arthur W. Kerr, 81, of Barnerville Road, died on Monday, November 17, 2008, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown following a brief illness.
Arthur was born May 29, 1927 in Boston, MA, the son of James and Nancy (Johnson) Kerr. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, and then enlisted in the United States Navy.
In 1960, he became an ordained priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and served most of his career there. He moved to Schoharie County in 1988 and became a licensed supply priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Albany. He also served as a supply minister at several Schoharie County churches.
Arthur called himself a "worker priest" and pursued his interest in farming throughout his life by raising beef cattle and vegetables.
He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Trudy, who died in 2003, and a son, Peter, who died in 2000.
Survivors include his second wife, Bonnie Kerr of Howes Cave, whom he married in 2004; 2 sons and daughters-in-law: James and Mara Kerr of Howes Cave, and John and Ruth Kerr of LaVerne, CA; 5 granddaughters, Jessica, Allison and Emily Kerr of LaVerne, CA, and Elizabeth and Mary Kerr of Howes Cave; 4 great-grandchildren: Enrique, Gabriel, Seth and Ruthie Kerr, of LaVerne, CA; 3 step-children: Kevin (Millissa) Young of Fall River, MA, Paige Young of Fort Plain, and Stephanie Young of Herndon, VA; and 3 step-grandchildren: Melody Wright, DeoYoung, and William Young, of Fall River, MA.
The Order for the Burial of the Dead will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main Street, Cobleskill, NY with The Right Rev. William Love, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany, officiating. Friends are also welcome to attend visitation from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill. Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery following the service.
