Sharon Springs- Arnold Dale Mereness, 71, of State Route 10, died Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Cobleskill Regional Hospital with his family at his side.
Born August, 27, 1939 in Sharon Springs, NY on the family farm, he was a son of Herschel and Juna (Spooner) Mereness.
Arnold was a 1958 graduate of Sharon Springs Central School and then enlisted in the United States Air Force in January of 1959. He proudly served his country until receiving an honorable discharge in 1965 following the death of his father.
He returned to the family farm and operated it with his brother, Ivan, from 1965 until 1988. In 1989 he became employed by Schoharie County Dept. of Public Works until retiring in 2003. Arnold also worked part time for the Schoharie County Senior Council as MA driver.
He served as commissioner for the Sharon Springs Volunteer Fire Department for fifteen years and was a member of the Slate Hill Cemetery Association. Arnold was also member of the American Legion Post 1269 of Sharon Springs and attended the Sharon Reformed Church.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Ivan and Gordon Mereness.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-one years, Barbara (Croinex) Mereness; his two sons: Barry Mereness of Sharon Springs and Duane (Cindy) Mereness of Farmington, NY; two grandchildren: Jared Allan Mereness and Amanda Lou Mereness, both of Farmington; a sister-in-law, Ruth Mereness of Sharon Springs and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tues., November 16, 2010 at the Sharon Reformed Church, State Route 10, Sharon Springs, with Rev. Pacia Ferrell-Vamvas and Rev. Merle Young co-officiating. Burial will follow in Slate Hill Cemetery, Town of Sharon, NY with full military honors. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held on Monday from 6 to 8 PM at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, NY.
