Alyce Mickel

Alyce Ruth Hewitt Mickel died peacefully in her sleep on December 18, 2021 at her home in Front Royal, Virginia.  She was 95, and ready to join her husband Robert E. Mickel, son Mark Hewitt Mickel, and a host of other friends and family that have preceded her on this new journey.

Alyce was born in East Syracuse, New York on September 4, 1926 to parents Lockwood Hewitt and Mary Weston Hewitt.  She later welcomed a sister, Betty (Hewitt} Mudge.  In 1945 Alyce married Robert E. Mickel and moved to his family farm on Mickel Hollow Road in Warnerville, New York where she remained for the next 70 years.  In 2016 Alyce moved to Front Royal Virginia to keep an eye on her daughters, Maxine A. Mickel of Warrenton and Dawn L. Mickel-Gardini of Front Royal.

Aside from her daughters, Alyce is survived by her daughter-in-law Cheryl (Sichart) Mickel, her grandchildren Ashley (Mickel) Portman and Derek Mickel, son-in-law John Gardini, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Alyce wore many hats in her lifetime…a crown not being the least of them.  She was an avid gardener and meticulously maintained lovely perennial borders on the farm well into her 80’s.  Her interest in herbs led to the creation of “Herbal Treasures”, an herb-themed gift business run from a renovated chicken coop on the farm.

A skillful seamstress, she sewed many a dress, hand stitched beautiful quilts and costumed multiple plays for local theater groups in and around Cobleskill.  Constantly crafting, Alyce always had an interesting project in the works.

Most importantly, Alyce always found time for the drop-in visits from her numerous friends and family members and enjoyed punctuating the day sitting on her porch with a glass of wine and good conversation.

Always willing to assist and generous to a fault, Alyce was a friend to everyone she met (both 2 and 4 legged).  She will be dearly missed.  A memorial service is planned for the summer of 2022 at a location still to be determined somewhere in Schoharie County.  Please join us in celebrating Alyce’s life... crowns provided.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.
