Alton Makely

Summit-Cobleskill- It is with sad hearts we announce that Alton "Country Boy" Makely 86 yrs. old died Fri. July 21, 2017 at his home in Cobleskill New York.

Lifelong resident of Summit, Alton was born on May 22, 1931 to the late Hayward and Valeria Makely. He was a graduate of Richmondville Central School and recently celebrated his 60th class reunion from SUNY Cobleskill where he received a two-year degree in agricultural specialty studies.

A previous dairy farmer on his "Green Acres" Farm with over 200 head of dairy cows in Charlotteville, Mr. Makely went on to develop his true passion for real estate, became a Real Estate Broker and established Country Boy Realty on Main Street, Cobleskill in 1969. At one point in time, his offices extended to four counties in the villages of Cobleskill, Worcester, Cooperstown and Mohawk. He became known as the "country boy" as he was visionary in developing farmlands, businesses and loved connecting people with their dreams whether it was a new home, a gentleman's farm, developing an expansive land project or creating new businesses in our Capital Region. He received many real estate awards over the years, which included Realtor of the Year from the Saratoga Schenectady Schoharie Association of Realtors in 2012. Alton touched the lives of many as he mentored and taught the art of real estate sales to hundreds of people in our region. He was a Town Supervisor for Summit and enjoyed his public service. Other passions included collecting antique and Cadillac cars, racing cars at the Fonda track, horse racing with his horse "Columbia Gem" and traveling our country enjoying many amazing adventures with family and friends. He was a member of the Lions Club, Elks Lodge and a longstanding board member of the Richmondville United Methodist Church. He truly appreciated the beauty of Schoharie County and the surrounding region. He thought there was no more beautiful place to live.

Alton is survived by two beloved daughters: Cindi Lisuzzo (Michael) and Susan Makely (Gary Cooper); devoted friend, Elsa Makely; former spouse, Claudette Wood (Keith). He was predeceased by his sister, Beatrice, "Aunt Bea", C. Jaycox and brother, Donald Makely. Alton will be remembered for being a wonderful father with an incredible zest for life, adventurous spirit, generosity to give and lifelong love of his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, July 31, 2017 at Richmondville United Methodist Church, Main St., Richmondville with Rev. Jeffrey Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Richmondville Rural Cemetery. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held from 3 to 6 PM on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Richmondville United Methodist Church or to a charity of one's choice.
