Cobleskill- Alta E. Weis, 85, of Berry Lane, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at her residence.
Born March 6, 1928 in Durham, NY, she was the daughter of John and Hazel (Owen) Merwin.
Alta was a homemaker and wife all her married life, and was an excellent cook. She also enjoyed crocheting and ceramics. Working with her husband, they operated three different dairy farms, and most recently a sawmill that Alta kept the books.
Alta was loved for her positive attitude and happy disposition. She was a member of the Jehovah's witnesses.
She was predeceased by her husband, Floyd, who died Jan. 5, 2013 and a half-brother, Ronald Schermerhorn.
Survivors include her three children: Gerard (Cynthia) Weis of Camden, NY, Jerry (Debra) Weis of Cobleskill and Joan Butler; her brother: Howard (Peggy) Merwin of Seward; two sisters: Loretta Wright of North Carolina and Bonnie German of Grand Gorge; half-brother: Robert Schermerhorn of Seward; ten grandchildren: Tammy (Charlie) Edmonds, James (Jennifer) Weis, Jesse Weis, Lesa Winton, Sarah (James) Siegfried, Jeremy Weis, Christina (Isaac) Jones, Allan (Nancy) Nirschl, Jr., Rebecca (Mark) Nicole, and Shaun (Wendy) Nirschl; eighteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
A Memorial Talk will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday, January 17, 2014 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, State Route 145, Cobleskill. Family and friends are also invited to attend a period of visitation to be held from 3:30 to 5:30 on Friday at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.
