Alma Smullen
Carlisle- Alma Mae Smullen, 101, formerly of State Route 20, died Thursday, August 22, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born September 4, 1911 in Carlisle, she was a daughter of Charles H. and Cora (Hart) Safford.
Alma was a lifelong area resident and attended the one room school house in Carlisle.
She married George H. Smullen on July 6, 1929 and was a happy homemaker. Alma was a member of the Carlisle Senior Citizens and volunteered at the Board of Elections. She attended the Carlisle Presbyterian Church.
She was predeceased by her husband on January 5, 2001, and was also predeceased by her daughter: Alice Duffey, and four sons: George, Carl, Larry and Richard.
Survivors include two sons: Kenneth Smullen of Essex Junction, VT and Dennis Smullen of Staten Island; twelve grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill with Rev. Bert Mayne officiating. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home prior to the service, from 1-2 PM. Burial will be in St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery.
