Middleburgh, NY: Mr. Allen C. McAvoy, 73, of Cotton Hill Road, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at his residence, following a long illness.

Allen was born on March 4, 1937 in Bronx, NY a son of the late Catherine (Schwartz) and Charles McAvoy.

Allen worked in carpentry and construction for most of his life. Most recently, he retired from Graham Laboratories in Hobart, NY as maintenance supervisor. Allen was an avid craftsman and loved woodworking as a hobby. He designed and constructed over 23 hope chests for family and friends. He also enjoyed sailing, fishing, hunting, photography and history. Allen fulfilled a life-long dream and enjoyed living on the Outer Banks until moving back to New York in 2005 to be near his family.

He was very proud of his Irish heritage. Allen's greatest love was his family and friends and sharing his wit, poems and songs. They always brought a smile and will live on in all who knew him.

Allen was predeceased by a son-in-law, Henry "Van" Pindar in 2004.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Rossi) McAvoy of Middleburgh, NY, whom he married on December 4, 1957 and daughters: Veronica (Dennis) McAvoy-Gonseth of Huntersland, NY, Victoria (George Bobar) McAvoy of Middleburgh, NY; granddaughters: Aubrey McAvoy-Greaney of Middleburgh, NY, Catherine McAvoy-Pindar of Huntersland, NY; grandsons: Ryan (Amber Burke) McAvoy of Central Bridge, NY, Jacob McAvoy-Greaney of Rochester, NY, John McAvoy-Bard of Delanson, NY, Henry V. Pindar, IV, of Huntersland, NY, Lucas McAvoy of Middleburgh, NY; sisters: Janice D'Astoli of Jackson, NJ, Linda Romaine of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Diane (Ralph) Fretta of Jackson, NJ; brother: Kenneth (Marianne) Sundbye of Dayton, NJ; many nieces and nephews.

Allen's family would like to extend their love and thanks to close friends, Tony and Nancy Sarris and sons, Mike and Carol Smith, Jerry and Lorraine Gentile, Billy Whitbeck and George and Karen Toften.

A Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh,NY with Rev. Carol Coltrain of the Huntersland United Methodist Church officiating. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation from 11am-1pm, Saturday, prior to the service. Cremation will take place at Vale Crematory in Schenectady, NY.
