Alfred Bergen,

Summit- Alfred T. Bergen, Jr., 72, of Bergen Lane, Summit, died Saturday, May 12, 2012, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born February 13, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of Rosalie (Jahr) and Alfred Bergen, Sr.

Al was in the United States Navel Reserves from 1958-1960 in Patuxent River, MD at the Navel Air Test Center. Al was employed by Grumman Aerospace for forty-three years, working at Calverton, NY, Great River, NY and Bentonville, PA. Upon retiring from Grumman, Al was a school bus driver for Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School for thirteen years.

Al was a member of the Richmondville Methodist Church. His hobbies included woodworking, stained glass, fishing, hunting, camping and motorcycling.

He is survived by his wife, Noreen (Hotaling) Bergen whom he married in 1986, two children: Stacey (Jim) Blunden of Sherburne, NY; Alfred J. (Debbie) Bergen of Hudson, FL; four stepchildren: Steven Veley of Summit; Mark (Stephanie) Veley of Richmondville; Jeffrey Veley of Summit; and Jamie (Marvin) Batcher of Guilderland; one brother: William Bergen of Summit, NY and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at Richmondville United Methodist Church, Main St., Richmondville, NY. Friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held at the church on Thursday, from 10 to 11 AM, prior to the service. Inurnment will follow in Richmondville Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Marathon for a Better Life, P.O. Box 268, Warnerville, NY 12187.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, NY.
