Cobleskill- Alexander David Allen, 86, born Sept. 11, 1927, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014 at Robinson Terrace in Stamford, NY.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Sadie "Sally" (Duran) Allen of Cobleskill; two sons: Kevin Duran Allen and his wife, Jo Lynn of Broken Arrow, OK and Brian Alexander Allen and his wife, Katherine of Niskayuna; two daughters: Sheila Allen Favreau of Enfield, CT and Kelly Elizabeth Cooper and her husband, Douglas of Stevensville, MD.

Alex was born in Amsterdam, the son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Carr) Allen. He was also predeceased by three brothers: Robert Allen of Cazenovia, Thomas Allen of Rye, NH, and Richard Allen of FL and four sisters: Mildred MacMorran of Poughkeepsie, Rita Allen, Jane Allen, and Catherine Lawrence of Amsterdam.

He is also survived by six grandchildren: Kristen, Andrew and Nicole Favreau of CT and Drew, Alexander, and Mary Allen of OK and two sisters: Florence Insogna of Amsterdam and Patricia Patrenicola.

Alex graduated from St. Mary's High School in Amsterdam in 1945. He enlisted in the US Navy shortly afterwards and was honorably discharged in 1946. He then worked for many years at Niagara Mohawk Power Company as a service man. He relocated with his family during that time and worked in Canajoharie as well as commuting to Troy until 1969 when the family moved to Cobleskill where Alex worked until retirement.

He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and a communicant of both St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cobleskill and the former St. Mary's in Sharon Springs. He thoroughly enjoyed long walks or hikes daily, working in his garden and yard at home, and was an avid reader, especially historical biographies.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 5, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 156 E. Main St., Amsterdam, where a calling hour will precede in the church chapel from 10 to 11 AM. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home 171 Elm St., Cobleskill and Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home of Middleburgh.
