Middleburgh- Gerald Delano Hamm, 84, of Warrior Way, died Wednesday, July 26, 2017 in the comfort of his home surrounded by family.
Born March 10, 1933 in West Fulton, he was the son of Ralph and Gladys (Morey) Hamm.
Gerald was a lifelong area resident and a United States Army veteran, serving during the Korean conflict until receiving an honorable discharge.
He received an Associate's Degree in Business Management and began his working career as a dairy tester for NY Dairy Herd Improvement Cooperative. He was employed as a NYS Forest Ranger for 17 years, during that time he was promoted to Captain. He then moved on to the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation as Region 4 Supervisor in Stamford, where he retired. Gerald kept busy with selling real estate for Shaw Realty; he was a substitute teacher and coach for various teams including Girls' JV & Varsity Soccer, Basketball and Softball at Middleburgh Central School, where he was an avid supporter of School Athletics. He also served as a Middleburgh Town Councilman, along with Town Justice for the Town of Fulton.
Gerald was an active member of the West Fulton Rod & Gun Club since 1948, volunteer for the West Fulton Fire Dept., Boy Scouts, American Red Cross, Schoharie County Conservation Assoc., West Fulton Snowmobile Club (as a founding member), West Fulton Methodist Church, served on the board for Summit Shock Facility, Middleburgh Youth Commission, Historian for the Town of Fulton, Schoharie Valley Soccer Club, and a member of the Schoharie County Democratic Party.
Always keeping busy, Gerald had many hobbies. He enjoyed hunting & fishing (first to legally shoot a turkey and fisher in NY), golfing, bird watching, farming, gardening, jeep rides, making maple syrup, writing and sharing stories about local history.
Survivors include his wife, Janice (Mesick) Hamm, whom he married August 4, 1968; his four children: Jeff (Karen) Almy of Middleburgh, Terri (Bret) Almy Hallenbeck of Tolland, CT, Kimberly (Shawn) Hamm Smith of Middleburgh and Aaron Hamm of Middleburgh; his sister: Iva (Don) Painter of Schenectady; seven grandchildren: Jessica (Gregory) Hallenbeck Woodruff, Justin (Michelle) Hallenbeck and Drew Hallenbeck all of Tolland, CT, Brody and Rylie Smith of Middleburgh, Olivia Hamm (daughter of Rachael Hamm) of Middleburgh and Ben Healy of Middleburgh; and three great-grandchildren: Cameron Hallenbeck, Liliana Woodruff, and Lucas Hallenbeck.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, August 4, 2017 at West Fulton United Methodist Church, West Fulton Road, West Fulton, NY with Michael Gebhard officiating. Burial will follow at Cobleskill Rural Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life to be held on Saturday, AUGUST 19, 2017 at the West Fulton Fire Department from 12:00 to 5:00PM.
