Sylvia E. Mallery

January 10, 1934 ~ December 2, 2017 (age 83)

Cobleskill- Sylvia E. Mallery, 83, of Cobleskill, died Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Albany Medical Center.

Born March 10, 1934 in Albany, she was the daughter of Roger H. and Margaret M. (Provost) Mallery, Sr.

Sylvia was a graduate of the former Cobleskill Central School and continued her higher education with achieving her doctorate.  She attended Skidmore College, Syracuse University, Harvard University, Radcliffe College, Columbia University, and Nova University.  Sylvia retired from SUNY Cobleskill after thirty plus years as a Professor.

She was a member of the All American Chorus on a European Tour, Festival Chorus at Tanglewood, Radcliffe Choral Society, and Madrigal Group at Syracuse University.  Receiving certificates in Opera and Voice-Mozartaum, Salzburg, Austria, Sylvia studied with Marion Fresch, Frederick Jagel and Eleanor Steber.

In her community, Sylvia was a member of the Cobleskill United Methodist Church, received an honorary alumnus Award in 1986 from SUNY Cobleskill, was listed in the 38th edition of Who’s Who in America, as well as being listed in Who’s Who in American Women.

At one time, Sylvia was president of Alpha Psi Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, Capital District Chapter of NAEYC, Topaz Unit Schoharie County Community Hospital, Schoharie County Republican Women, and Mohawk Valley Symphony.

In her leisure, she enjoyed skiing, golfing, playing cards, and singing.

Along with her parents, Sylvia was predeceased by her sister, Mary L. Haas and niece, Rogina Jeffries.

Survivors include her brother, Roger H. (Jean) Mallery, Jr., of Cobleskill; niece, Susan J. Mallery (Steven Winegard) of Cobleskill; nephew, RJ (Diane) Mallery of Cobleskill; grandnieces and grandnephews:  Kelsey and Cameron Mallery-Winegard, Miranda and Mason Mallery all of Cobleskill, Julia and Philip Jeffries of Boston, MA.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2018.  The family requests memorial contributions to be made to Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, Inc., PO Box 40, Howes Cave, NY 12092 or Cobleskill United Methodist Church, 107 Chapel St., Suite 1, Cobleskill, NY 12043.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.
