John J. DiCocco

February 24, 1936 ~ August 10, 2018 (age 82)

John DiCocco, 82, formerly of Jefferson, NY, lately of Schenectady, NY, died August 10, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

John was born February 24, 1936 in Schenectady, NY, to Elena (Ferro) and John DiCocco.

John had 39 years of service to New York State; first as an officer with the Capitol Police then as a Corrections Officer at the former Summit Shock Facility. He retired in December 1998.

He attended Bryant College (now Bryant University) in Rhode Island. He was a graduate of Albany Business College and Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady.

John served in the New York National Guard; he was called up to active duty with the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1961 to 1962.

John served as president of the Jefferson Central Board of Education for 15 years and was a member of the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Corps. He was a member of the Jefferson Masonic Lodge, Working Lodge #554, since 1971.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara, and his children: daughter Beth DiCocco and her husband, Martin Lyons, and their children Hannah (Zach) Housmyer and their son, Eli; Hilary Lyons and her fiancé Darin Trimillos, and Grace Lyons; daughter Elena Surls and her husband, Joseph, and their children Michael; Nicholas and his wife, Jacky; Christopher (Jake), Samuel, and Victoria; and son John and his wife, Tammy, and their daughter Olivia.

He is survived by his brothers Robert and Dominic.  He was predeceased by his sister, Alice Vokins and two brothers, Anthony and Nicholas.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, NY. Friends and Family can call from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, August 13, 2018 at the funeral home. Burial will be at the West Jefferson Cemetery on North Harpersfield Road, Jefferson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends consider donations to the Cobleskill Regional Hospital. The family would like to thank the hospital staff for the excellent and attentive care they provided to John at the end of his life.
